Are Your Beliefs Bananas?

Here’s a clever way to catch a monkey (apparently used in India):

Make a hole in a coconut and put a banana inside.
When a monkey comes along, it has no trouble fitting its hand in the hole to get the banana, but once it has the banana, it can’t get its hand out while holding onto it.
No problem, right? Let go of the banana.

But they don’t.

They keep trying to get their hand out while holding onto their prize.
All human trappers have to do is walk up and grab the monkey.

Maybe you believe good people take care of others. When your doctor tells you that you need to take more time for yourself, you respond, “I can’t, I’m too busy taking care of [dependent loved one].”

Drop the banana or keep holding it, your choice.

Or maybe you believe that people who do wrong deserve to be punished. You spend hours frustrated and angry at someone for something they did and think of all the things you’d like to do to make them pay.

Drop it or keep holding on…

What’s your banana?
