If you’re trying to get rid of your anxiety, you have lots of treatment options. Pharmaceuticals, herbs and counseling can help, but there’s a component that may still be missing: a change of habit.
Changing habits is tough. Everything you do (especially the things you do without thinking) strengthens them: “Practice makes permanent”
We take for granted that running makes you a better runner, writing makes you a better writer, etc. But let’s remember, the concept is the same for your mood: Getting angry, frustrated or panicked are all habits.
So how about countering habits with habits? It’s hard work at first, but perseverance can mean a new “automatic” for you.
For example, why not try to make a habit of:
- Unconditionally forgiving (yourself and others)
- Meditating for 20 minutes a day
- Going for a 10-20 minute walk each day
- Taking 1 hour a day (preferably before bed) to rest or spend time with a love one
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Drinking tea or water instead of coffee (coffee has health benefits, but can worsen anxiety)
Changing habits means persistence and can take a while, but when it comes to reducing your anxiety or even just improving your outlook, it’s worth the effort.
